Rethinking waste management in business tourism

We’re looking for a solution for the sound management of residual materials for events and business tourism.

Problem and need :

Business tourism has a major economic impact on Quebec. However, it sometimes comes at a significant environmental cost. Event venues are keen to adopt eco-responsible practices, both internally and for the events they host. A number of actions can be taken, including sound management of residual materials. The MT Lab invites innovative companies to present a solution that could facilitate the holding of zero-waste events covering one or more of the following themes:

Design a tool for organizing events with lower environmental impact and promoting the principle of short loops.
Design reusable lunchbox containers and a system for using them
Propose an alternative/innovative container to replace recyclable lunchbox packaging
Review the design of waste sorting islands in order to process/separate the types of containers used and organic materials.
Transform or reuse organic matter from leftover lunchbox food that is no longer viable for consumption

Tourisme d'affaires Québec, an industry association made up of hotels, convention and trade show centers, tourist destinations, organizing companies, municipalities and regional tourism associations, will be testing the chosen solution during its next annual flagship event.
Specializing in in-house catering services and event catering, Capital Traiteur is a key player in business tourism in Quebec's major centers, and will also be involved in implementing a solution for the sound management of residual materials at this and future events.

Major milestones

The selected innovative company will have to implement and operate a pilot project as part of the Quebec Business Tourism Conference on November 29 and 30, 2023. Capital Traiteur, le Palais des congrès de Montréal et l’organisateur de cet événement seront impliqués dans le processus.
The innovative company will have to propose a solution adapted to events or venues with an average capacity of capacity of 250 visitors.
The innovative company may enter into partnerships with other companies offering complementary services to enhance the solution presented. However, it must be the sole representative of the solution to the MT Lab.
The innovative company must propose a business model with a realistic and sustainable cost strategy for the tourism sector.
The pilot project must be cost-free for the challenge holder, and any expenses exceeding the funding will be borne by the company.
