La TOHU and Retournzy

The customer

TOHU is a laboratory for sustainable development through culture (circus – earth – human). It is a group that wishes to rally, through circus arts, different spheres of our society such as community, vitality and the environment. It is a presenter specializing in contemporary circus that works in the Saint-Michel district as a unifying ambassador.

Project summary

TOHU organizes a summer bistro with an outdoor terrace. As part of its environmental mission, the organization strives to meet high demand in the most environmentally friendly way possible, taking into account all labour and sanitation constraints.

That's why the collaboration with the Retournzy cooperative, which offers a turnkey reusable tableware rental service, helped the event be a great success.

The Challenge

By remaining as environmentally friendly as possible, it was necessary to be able to serve thousands of meals without being able to use a dishwasher. Labor is one of the constraints since the use of reusable tableware must be clear and simple to avoid confusion and waste.

It is therefore necessary to raise awareness among spectators and install waste management terminals that are efficient, easy to use and clearly signposted.

The Solution

Retournzy provides, transports and cleans reusable containers at these events for a greener service. The transport is carried out by bicycle and the whole operation produces very few emissions.

All of this has made it possible to save:

  • 4500 single-use containers
  • 10,000 utensils
  • 2100 disposable cups

*Only 2% material loss.

The Service Provider

Retournzy is a cooperative that offers a rental, delivery, collection, washing and sanitation service of reusable items for events and food service businesses.

The all-inclusive service offers an ecological alternative to disposable containers in order to reduce waste in the restaurant, event, corporate and institutional sectors. The mission is to revolutionize the way we consume meals by offering an ecological, economical and community-contributing solution.

Results and findings

The containers were available throughout the 2023 summer season. The very positive feedback showed that the project was feasible with good organization.

The project prevented the use of 11,165 disposable items during the festival. We hope to see this solution adopted more frequently at events of this scale.
